Sometimes, technology should just stay out of it..

With the sudden urge to play board games, my roommates and I went to Target this past Wednesday to purchase Monopoly for our house. I expected to just walk straight to the games isle and pick up the traditional edition...no problem. But it turns out that it wasn't that simple. Monopoly DVD edition, Monopoly Computer game, Monopoly Wii...where was the traditional one that I had grown up playing? It was stuck behind its new and media-friendly counterparts that were made to incorporate the new demand for technology. These new versions seem pretty stupid to me...I mean, its a group game so how does one person sitting on the computer playing monopoly incorporate the multiplayer aspect? Technology has made alot of things easier and more fun...but I don't think it should touch the traditional Monopoly. It's like baseball..the game works the way it is and hasn't changed much since it started...there are a few roid users that ruin everyones fun once and awhile, but in the end the game is best when untouched.

I agree Molly, kids are missing out on the original versions of these board games. Sometimes technology has adverse effects on these games and can remove a lot of the most fun aspects for more technologically advanced "improvements." I remember receiving the computer version of Monopoly as a gift and only using it once because the magic of the game had been replaced by an automated and artificial feel.
I think the appeal in the computer version of Monopoly has to do with the fact that you can probably start and stop as you please, instead of having to play for a couple of years just to finish one game. I'm sure our roommate Katie would agree, and would rather play on the computer instead of playing what she calls, "the never ending game."
